President Obama Reaffirms Nation’s Commitment to Renewable Energy, and Need for Business Sustainability and Innovation

In 2012’s State of the Union address, President Obama emphatically committed to renewable energy in the United States. He reinforced his message by announcing an initiative to develop clean energy on public lands, plus a groundbreaking purchase of renewable energy by the Department of Defense – the world’s largest consumer of energy. Throughout his address, the president stressed that sustainability is vital for a healthy economy now.

While renewable energy is vital to our planet’s survivability, it is just one part of an overall sustainability culture that is taking hold throughout the world. Helping to drive this culture, companies around the globe, both large and small, are making sustainability a high priority strategic initiative. Through their commitment, these companies are already seeing increased company profitability while helping to maintain our planet and its communities.

The University of Vermont, a U.S. News & World Report-ranked university, has long understood this commitment to sustainability and to the need for effective corporate sustainability training. Beginning April 2012, The University of Vermont will be providing a new Certificate in Sustainable Innovation, offered monthly, 100% online. Future-focused business professionals everywhere can now acquire the vital skills needed to take advantage of the extraordinary opportunities presented by the demand for green energy, innovation and sustainability.

The shift to sustainable business practices is not limited to the U.S., as organizations worldwide are embracing green operations, techniques and methodologies to boost the Triple Bottom Line: social responsibility, environmental protection and profitability. It is clear that when businesses implement green business practices, the resulting positive impact is felt throughout the organization and the greater community.

“We are proud that our partnership with the University of Vermont aligns with the nation’s objectives, by putting vital sustainability training within reach of businesses and professionals everywhere,” said Adrian Marrullier, Executive Vice President for University Alliance. “As business leaders become the force behind innovation, they contribute to profitability and a sustainable future for everyone.”

UVM’s Certificate in Sustainable Innovation curriculum is provided by a national leader in sustainability, home to the Institute for Global Sustainability and recognized with an “A” rating from the College Sustainability Report Card in 2011. Participants will learn skills such as maximizing resources, establishing sustainability throughout business operations and reducing operational deficiencies, and will gain must-have insight into stakeholder engagement, government regulations and more.

The program is powered by technology from University Alliance, and features a 100% online, video-based e-learning environment. UVM’s renowned faculty shares their expertise through streaming video lectures, while interactive tools such as live chat, discussion boards and email facilitate communication between students and instructors. 24/7 online access allows busy professionals to attend classes at their convenience, while balancing work, family or military responsibilities.
