The University of Scranton Announces Scholarship Recipients for Master’s in Education Students Enrolled in 100% Online Degree Programs

The University of Scranton, a U.S. News & World Report-ranked and regionally accredited university, in partnership with University Alliance and Bisk Education, awarded scholarships to two educators who have demonstrated their dedication to helping students. The Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarship helps teachers excel in today’s academic environment by earning a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction or in Educational Administration.

The University of Scranton would like to congratulate scholarship winners for the Special Fall 2011, Part B session:

Laura Longobardo always knew she wanted to be a teacher so that she could make a difference in children’s lives. As a teacher in a disadvantaged Bronx neighborhood, Ms. Longobardo has helped countless children in her role as a literacy specialist. To address her students’ need for meaningful after-school activities, she started a Girl Scout troop, a modern ballet and jazz dance group, and a cheerleading squad geared toward academic success. Ms. Longobardo will put her online master’s in education to immediate use in her new position as Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Anne Pereira began her career teaching first grade, but quickly realized that she was meant to teach special education at an inner city school. Since then, she has organized numerous donation drives to provide her underprivileged students and their families with clothes, food, transportation and holiday presents. She also organizes inclusion programs that give her disabled students the opportunity to develop relationships with their non-disabled peers. She plans to become a principal after receiving her master’s degree in education.

“On behalf of the University of Scranton, I would like to congratulate these two amazing scholarship winners,” said W. Jeffrey Welsh, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Graduate and Continuing Education at the University of Scranton. “We are always proud to honor outstanding educators and help foster their continued success.”

The University of Scranton’s 100% online programs, powered by University Alliance technology, provide students with 24/7 course access. The university’s video-based e-learning model means that no campus visits are required.

The two scholarships are valued at more than $4,000 each, and recipients must remain an active student in good standing in one of The University of Scranton’s degree programs.  Since it was established in 2010, the scholarship program has awarded 18 students a total of over $76,000.

The deadline to apply for the next Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarship for the Special Spring 2012, Part B session is February 19, 2012.
