White House Invites Michigan State University Supply Chain Management Expert to Contribute to Sustainability Panel

David Closs, Chairperson of the renowned Department of Supply Chain Management at Michigan State University (MSU), was recently invited to the White House to participate on a select panel of supply chain management leaders. The panel discussion focused on ways to make the nation’s supply chains more sustainable. Hosted by the U.S. General Services Administration, the March 30 event included experts from the government and academia, as well as the business and nonprofit sectors.

Dr. Closs has been researching the supply chain for 35 years and is at the forefront of viewing supply chain from a larger perspective. Dr. Closs remarked that those involved in developing sustainable supply chains must think beyond being environmentally friendly, and include ethical practices, knowledgeable workers and good economics in their planning, as well. “My argument is that supply chain managers have to broaden their perspective,” Closs said. “If you’re really going to have a sustainable supply chain, you have to balance these four dimensions.”

MSU’s undergraduate and graduate supply chain programs, ranked #1 and #2 by U.S. News & World Report, are known for their holistic approach to the entire supply chain. This perspective benefits the panel’s discussion involving the nation’s largest supply chains. Now supply chain professionals around the world have access to learn and benefit from this perspective with MSU’s new 100% online master certificate programs offered through University Alliance. Students enrolled in the Supply Chain Management Master and Advanced Master Certificates are taught by Dr. Closs along with additional campus-based faculty.
