Dominican University Announces Teacher Education Scholarship Recipients for Summer II, 2012 Session

U.S. News & World Report-ranked and regionally accredited Dominican University, together with University Alliance and Bisk Education, has awarded scholarships to two outstanding educators who wish to pursue Master of Arts in Education degrees.

Dominican University congratulates Nora Farid-Nestor and Deborah Labno, recipients of the Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarships for Summer II, 2012. Both winners are enrolled in Dominican’s MAEd: Reading program.

Nora Farid-Nestor teaches English as a Second Language at a middle school in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her ambitions were shaped by her reading struggles as the dyslexic child of immigrants who were non-native English speakers. “I made it my life goal to master Language (capital L) and to help others do the same,” Farid-Nestor said.

Deborah Labno is a high school ESL teacher at Maine East High School in Park Ridge, IL and loves the opportunity to influence youngsters’ lives. “This is truly the beauty of being a teacher,” said Labno, of Palatine, Illinois. “Each school year we immerse ourselves into the commitment of advancing our students, in hope that the content, skills, and confidence stay with them forever.”

The scholarships provide 33% of current tuition, helping the recipients to gain essential knowledge and skills they can use to further their career and encourage their students to reach their potential.

“Dominican University is committed to supporting teachers who seek to positively influence the lives of their students, said Colleen Reardon, EdD, Dean of the School of Education. “We congratulate Ms. Labno and Ms. Farid-Nestor. Dominican University is proud to honor such outstanding educators.”

Dominican’s 100% online programs, which are powered by University Alliance technology, offer students 24/7 access to professor-led courses that include online discussion boards, streaming video lectures, live chat rooms and email, as well as MP3 and MP4 lectures available for download to most mobile devices. The video-based e-learning model means that campus visits aren’t required, making it convenient and flexible for teachers considering a master’s degree in education.

To be eligible for the Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarship, teachers must be first-time applicants to any of Dominican’s three Master of Arts in Education degree programs and have a bachelor’s, master’s, specialist or doctorate degree with at least a 3.0 GPA from a regionally accredited institution. They must also demonstrate that they have had had a positive impact on others.

With the availability of scholarships, this is an excellent time for educators to pursue a Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in Reading, ESL or Elementary Education.
