Dominican University Awards Scholarships for Master of Education Students

Dominican University, a U.S. News & World Report-ranked and accredited university, in partnership with University Alliance and Bisk Education, recently awarded two scholarships to educators who have made a significant difference in the lives of their students.

The Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarship winners for the Summer II, 2011 session are:

Committed to her students and respected by her peers, Ms. Lerman is dedicated to her students’ success. Throughout her education career, she has worked with students of all ages and abilities, with a dual emphasis on helping those from other countries learn English as a second language.

Ms. Lerman provides support and encouragement to all of her students, many of whom face challenging economic and linguistic circumstances. One such student was a deaf student with an additional disability that would eventually lead to blindness. Faced with this potentially devastating diagnosis, the student relied on Ms. Lerman’s support and guidance. With her help, he was able to learn that his life could still be full of opportunities and that he could achieve his goals despite his disabilities.

Respected by students and peers, Ms. Nowitzke is known as a strong instructor with a passion for her students and a creative approach to meeting their needs. She decided to become a teacher so that she could make a difference in the lives of others and is now in her second year of teaching.

Ms. Nowitzke has had a positive impact on the lives of many of her students, including one student who was unable to read at the beginning of the school year. By the end of the year, he was reading at a second grade level and even wrote a poem that was published in the school’s magazine. Another student struggled academically due to severe autism. With Ms. Nowitzke’s help, the student’s vocabulary dramatically improved. He is now comfortable interacting with his peers and is participating in after-school activities.

Teachers enrolling for the first time in one of Dominican University’s three 100% online Master of Arts in Education degree programs are eligible to apply for this distinguished award, which supports their ongoing professional development and the enhancement of career opportunities. Scholarship recipients receive special tuition rates for as long as they remain active in one of Dominican’s video-based, e-learning degree programs.

The Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarship program is ongoing with two recipients selected for each of the six sessions per year. The deadline to apply for the next Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarship for the Fall I, 2011 session is August 14, 2011.
