About 130 employees from Bisk Education participated in the 9th annual PNC Bank Miles for Moffitt 5K at the University of South Florida on Saturday, May 10 ― raising $5,800 for cancer research at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.
“This was our second time participating,” said Bisk’s Benefits and Wellness Administrator Wendy Vera. “Bisk had one of the biggest teams there. It was exciting to see so many employees show up on their day off to support such a worthy cause.”
More than 7,500 people came out for Saturday’s race, raising more than $594,000 ― $248,000 more than last year. One hundred percent of all donations and registration fees will be used to fund 11 research projects at Moffitt.
“My uncle’s fighting bladder and prostate cancer right now,” said Lisa Ryan, enrollment manager for Michigan State University certificate programs. “I wanted to support him in his fight. It was an emotional day, but there was a strong sense of camaraderie, like we were all in it together.”
Nicole Tillett, an enrollment specialist for Florida Tech, was there to honor her grandfather, who survived testicular cancer, and her aunt, a breast cancer survivor.
“I’ve lost both grandmother’s to cancer,” she said. “My best friend is fighting melanoma now. This was really personal for me.”
Since 2006, Miles for Moffitt has raised more than $2 million and funded 35 researchers at Moffitt, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida.
